Gibbs Aquada

The Gibbs Aquada challenged the conventions of automotive and marine engineering, combining the demands of both in a single amphibious vehicle. We developed the composite manufacturing processes and tooling required to turn this ambitious concept into a repeatable production programme.

Pioneering Composite Manufacturing for Amphibious Vehicles

We was responsible for developing and manufacturing the composite structures for the Gibbs Aquada, from its complex GRP hull to the exterior bodywork, hatches and spoilers. Moving from initial prototypes to production required the development of specialised tooling, resin transfer moulding processes and material systems capable of meeting demanding structural and cosmetic requirements. The hull presented particular challenges, combining foam-core sandwich construction, heavily reinforced sections and integrated mounting features. We developed the necessary materials, infusion strategies and manufacturing processes to achieve consistent quality across these complex structures. Over an 18-month period, we produced 63 vehicle sets, demonstrating the ability to translate ambitious engineering concepts into reliable, repeatable manufacture.

  • Production of 63 vehicle sets over an 18-month period
  • Development of foam-core sandwich structures using thermoformed Airex materials
  • Integrated polyurethane cores and co-moulded threaded mounting inserts
  • Material and resin system development to achieve structural and cosmetic requirements
  • Manufacture of exterior panels, hatches, engine covers and rear spoilers
